Jennings & Barrett are celebrating 115 years with a new mission: We want to plant 115 trees across the London Boroughs of Bexley, Southwark, Lewisham, and Bromley!
To help us achieve this, we’re asking local community organisations to express interest in receiving one or more trees by completing this form.
Why trees?
We’re scoping the viability of our mission to plant 115 trees because we want to celebrate our longevity in a manner that also enables us to benefit our local communities.
Community has always been important to Jennings & Barrett – over the years we have sponsored charities, schools, youth sports teams, entrepreneurship schemes and provided career opportunities through apprenticeship schemes. We like to focus our community contributions to our locale, so that as we grow, the wider location can also benefit.
We have chosen to celebrate our anniversary by planting trees for local communities and organisations because of trees’ long-lasting benefits. Through our project, we hope to help create greener, healthier neighbourhoods. By planting trees, we can also help to:
- Improve air quality;
- Reduce noise pollution;
- Provide shade and cooling;
- Enhance biodiversity and support local wildlife;
- Foster a sense of pride and connection among residents and visitors.
Why Nominate Your Organisation for a Tree?
Planting trees can be a simple yet powerful way of improving your local environment and driving a greater sense of community and belonging for those who work in or visit your organisation.
A tree can be used to:
- Enhance shared spaces
- Contribute to beauty and shade
- Inspire a greater appreciation of nature and wildlife
- Encourage community wellbeing and commitments to sustainability.
Whilst also contributing to cleaner air. In addition, we hope to be able to work with one or two of the locations where trees will be planted to host a tree planting celebration event to commemorate our mission and provide additional benefits for that community – stay tuned to find out more on this as our plans develop.
What should I consider about the proposed location ahead of nominating a location for a tree?
It’s best to consider the following aspects when deciding on a location to nominate for planting trees:
- Is it at least 10m away from any building, fence, or other trees?
- Is there space for the upwards growth of the tree? Overhead obstacles such as powerlines or overhanding structures could restrict growth or be affected by the tree.
- Would a tree risk the use of the space, e.g., by potentially blocking paths or causing potential damage to pavements?
If you’re not sure, please nominate and we’ll work with you to advise on the best location for the tree.
How do I nominate a location for a tree?
To nominate a location for a tree, click the above button and complete a short form. We’re asking for:
- The organisation name and purpose
- Your connection to the organisation
- The details of any person we need to approach in regard to gaining permission to plant a tree
- How many trees you believe you can support
- Whether you or your organisation can reasonably commit to caring for the tree for three years (as they will require regular watering).
Thanks to the following organisations for their support:
Oxleas Tree Care Ltd – Oxleas will be performing the tree planting and supporting tree maintenance
Street Trees for Living – STFL are a community forester organisation. We are hoping to work with them to complete this mission, but would also like to thank them for their shared knowledge which enabled us to better understand the logistics that this mission involves.
